The feature I considered most valuable was the inspiring letters from actual Guests about Cast Members whose behavior had exceeded their expectations. People love this section of the newsletter and look forward each week to seeing whose names will be mentioned. Perhaps no other aspect of life at Walt Disney World did more for morale and team building during my time there than The Main Street Diary.

Pre-shift meetings. No matter what kind of company you run, one of the most effective ways to move employees along the learning curve is to hold brief, well-organized meetings before the start of operations each day. Just gather everyone around, and teach something new. Think about it: Ten minutes a day add up to more than forty hours of free education a year! Imagine what that much training would cost if you sent employees to a seminar for that long.

I gave every manager at Walt Disney World the following guidelines to help them think through their pre-shift meeting agendas. The heading was “Why Do We Have Pre-Shift Meetings?”

To have two-way communication daily.

To tell Cast Members what is important.

To thank them for their great performance.

To answer any questions.

To provide product and service knowledge.

To find out what they need to perform properly.

To inspire them.
